How to Open a Mobi or ePub File

Mobi Files

Mobi files are for kindle devices. You can also send a mobi file to your kindle account and read it anywhere you have the kindle app. You will not be able to use a kindle device to open an epub file. There are two options for transferring a mobi file…you can do it through email or through USB.

Transferring Files to your Kindle Through Email

Instructions are adapted from the Amazon Help pages and eBook Partnership.

  1. Download the mobi file to your computer. The file will have the extension .mobi after the file name. Make sure you remember where you save it on your computer.
  2. Go to Amazon’s website and log into your account.
  3. Click on your account. Scroll down to the digital content section and select Manage Your Kindle or Mange Your Content and Devices.
  4. Select Settings and scroll down to Personal Document Settings. There will be the heading Send to Kindle email settings. There you’ll see your kindle email address. It’ll be _____@kindle.com
  5. Go to the Approved Personal Document E-mail List section, which is also under Manage Your Content and Devices. Add your email address to the list. Now the Kindle device will accept files sent from that address.
  6. In your email, compose a new email and send it to the @kindle.com email address you found in step 4.
  7. Attach the mobi file and send your email. You do not need to add a subject line or any text in the bottom of the email…just attach the file and click send.
  8. Wait five or so minutes (usually it’s a lot less than five minutes, but sometimes it does take that long). Open your kindle and sync.Your book should appear in the books or documents section.
  9. Voila! The file is now on your kindle account cloud, and can be downloaded and read on any kindle device or kindle app connected to your account.
